Editing as Exploration, A Fiction Revision Workshop with K Hank Jost

SUMMARY:

  • This 4-week Zoom-and-Correspondence Workshop starts on May 11th.

  • Registration is $200

  • Participation is limited to 10 people and every participant will workshop/rework a 1,000-2,000 word piece of fiction.


HOW THE WORKSHOP WILL WORK:

Saturdays at Noon, starting on the 11th of May, the cohort will meet to discuss techniques in textual manipulation, revision practices, and the art of reading one's writing. For two hours (Noon EST to 2pm EST), the cohort will listen to a short presentation/lecture by K Hank Jost on the day's topic, complete one (1) in-class writing exercise, and participate in roundtable discussion/workshare concerning the day's topic/exercise. Between each session there will be a writing assignment and correspondence (email or phone) with Jost about the assignment. Students must bring a complete draft of fiction (1,000-2,000 words) that they feel comfortable gutting, chopping-up, expanding, re-ordering, rewriting, etc.

  • Session 2: COMPRESSING (The 'Red-Pen' Draft)

  • Session 3: RE-ORDERING (The 'Cut-Up' Draft)

  • Session 4: UNEARTHING (The 'Interpretive' Draft)

ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS WELCOME--THOUGH THE CLASS WILL BE THOROUGH AND GENERATIVE.

ABOUT K HANK JOST:

K Hank Jost is the editor of A Common Well Journal. He is also the author of the novel MadStone and the novel-in-stories Deselections (published by Whiskey Tit Books). His short stories and poems have appeared/are forthcoming in Hobart, Vol. 1 Brooklyn, X-R-A-Y Lit Mag, BULL, and Misery Tourism, among others, and he has been a regular contributor to the New Haven Independent. He has taught for the Brooklyn Center for Theatre Research, and currently teaches at Gotham Writers Workshop. Hank believes language operates as a commons, and through its purposeful deployment all lost commons may be rendered fresh.
